Wines of the Month
This summer, Bordeaux and the wider Gironde faced an extraordinary combination of heat, drought and devastating wildfires. The fires that swept through the region burned more than 42,000 hectares, forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate and had a major impact on local communities and tourism. At the same time, their vineyards were dealing with extreme heat and exceptionally early ripening, with some growers facing smaller yields and difficult decisions about when to harvest. It was a summer that has brought home just how vulnerable this remarkable corner of France can be, and how much the people who live and work there have at stake.
That makes September’s Bordeaux Wine Month feel particularly worth supporting. It is not simply an excuse to open a bottle of claret; it is a chance to celebrate the people, landscapes and traditions behind the wines, and to support the producers and independent wine trade that help keep Bordeaux so central to the wine world. Bordeaux is far more diverse than its reputation sometimes suggests: yes, the classic reds reign at the moment, but there are fresh vibrant whites, elegant rosés, and sweet and sparkling wines all to explore as well.
At Brompton Wine, there are plenty of ways to explore that diversity, including Château Argadens Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend from Entre-Deux-Mers, and Château Angludet from Margaux, a long-standing Sichel family estate whose wines are known for their elegance and finesse.
This September, please join us in raising a glass to Bordeaux - they haven't had an easy year. Supporting Bordeaux Wine Month means discovering something new, buying a bottle from a producer you might not otherwise encounter, sharing it with friends and remembering that every bottle represents a landscape, a community and generations of hard work. After such a difficult summer, that feels like a very good reason to celebrate Bordeaux.
